The Adversary

"Satan is real and will use any means to try to destroy us."
-Spencer W. Kimball-

Satan, Lucifer, the adversary, devil; what do all of these words have in common? They describe he who opposed God's plan in our pre-mortal life. The one who would have taken away our agency to choose good or bad, who had one-third of God's children choose to follow him. He who was defeated in that pre-mortal life and sent down to earth with his followers, never to receive a body, but to spend their days trying to influence and tempt followers of Christ to abandon the gospel path.

Over the past few days; I was pondering and reading on a number of topics, trying to decide which one to write on; then last night happened. An evil man, one whose sole purpose in life has now become to persecute members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has illegally entered our temples, secretly filming the sacred things that we hold so dear. As evil as I consider that to be, I never expected he would go as far as he declared he will last night. He has promised to sneak 2 women porn "stars" into our sacred temples and to produce a pornographic film of them in what we call the "sealing room", or where couples are married.

This isn't just basic "anti-mormonism." I understand everyone has their agency, that they will choose their own path. For some, that means leaving the church and opposing its teachings. This goes further than being against teachings of a religion; this has become a hate crime, and one that nobody should condone or support.

I was reading in the book "Jesus the Christ" today and a number of things stuck out to me:

1 - Even Jesus Christ, our Savior, had people who saw the miracles He performed, the truths He taught, and after everything they saw, still chose to mock Him, ridicule Him and call Him a false prophet. Just as Jesus Christ was persecuted, so are followers of Him persecuted today.

2 - Satan has the ability to have so much influence over those who allow him to, that they are basically (or actually are) possessed by the spirit of the devil. There are multiple accounts of Jesus Christ casting the evil spirits out of people. Those spirits literally proclaiming "You are the son of God!" and leaving in fear of him. Just as in times of old, when people fall so far away from the light of Christ, they open themselves up to the influences of the adversary and can become possessed by his evil spirits.

As I read about these encounters today, I could not help but think of the evil man who conspires to desecrate a House of the Lord. For him to even entertain such thoughts, he has allowed that spirit, the devil, who so vehemently opposed God's plan to take control of his life.

Spencer W. Kimball said something along these lines:

"The arch deceiver has studied every way possible to achieve his ends, using every tool, every device possible. He takes over, distorts, and changes and camouflages everything created for the good of man... so he may take over their minds and pervert their bodies and claim them his."

Joseph F. Smith said:

"...by every possible means he seeks to darken the minds of men and then offers them falsehood and deception in the guise of truth. Satan is a skillful imitator, and as genuine gospel truth is given the world in ever-increasing abundance, so he spreads the counterfeit coin of false doctrine... [as] the father of lies, he has... become, through the ages of practice in his nefarious work, such an adept that were it possible, he would deceive the very elect."

Satan's sole purpose and mission is to lead people away from Christ. To lead them to misery and sadness. In my readings today, I also read about how Satan tempted even Christ himself, on at least 3 occasions. Jesus Christ, the only perfect man to walk the earth, was not safe from having Satan try to lead Him away. Even in the bible, Satan attempted to tempt Moses, saying "Moses, son of man, worship me."

As we get closer to the second coming of our Savior, the influence of the adversary will grow stronger, more desperate. He will stop at nothing to lead the faithful away from God's path.

Marion G. Romney expounded on the ways Satan will try to lure us away, via the Book of Mormon:

"For behold, at that day [that's today] shall he rage in the hearts of the children of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good. And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well - and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell. And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none - and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance." (2 Nephi 28:19-22)

He went on to say:

"Now I am not calling attention to these things to frighten, stampede, or discourage anyone. I refer to them because I know they are true, and I am persuaded that if we are to 'conquer Satan, and...escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work', we must understand and recognize the situation as it is. This is no time for [followers of Christ] to equivocate."

Just as he said above... I'm not writing this post to scare anyone. I'm writing this to bring awareness at the power that the adversary has and can have over each of us. If we don't actively study the scriptures, go to church, do those things we know will strengthen our "armor"; then we are opening ourselves up to the possibility of those influences. Even if we DO all the things we should, Satan will still do everything in his power to lead us away. Whether by his own influence or by the influence of those he controls.

My fellow believers of Christ; now is not the time to be scared of Satan. Now is the time to stand up to Satan. As we grow ever closer to Jesus Christ returning to the earth, we must make our stand. I encourage all of us to do the things we know we must do in order to strengthen ourselves against those evil influences that seek to destroy us. When we see evil, don't shrug it off, but fight against it. Defend your belief in Christ, that you hold so dear.

"Our course is clear and certain. It is to strictly obey the commandments of the Lord, as they are recorded in the scriptures and as they are being given by the living prophets." (Romney)

The commandments of the Lord are a barrier that protects us from the great and spacious building. As we are tempted to stray from the gospel path, we might think "well, just disobeying this once won't matter" but it does. Hold strong in your belief of Christ, always keep yourself in a spot in your life that you have the Spirit with you, for with the Spirit, we will be able to detect the influences of the devil and the fake doctrine and beliefs he is successfully teaching the world.

Make your stand against that which is evil.

1 Peter 5:8 - Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

Mosiah 16:3 - ...and the devil has power over them; yea, even that old serpent that did beguile our first parents, which was the cause of their fall; which was the cause of all mankind becoming carnal, sensual, devilish, knowing evil from good, subjecting themselves to the devil.

  1. I'm so grateful you wrote about this. I'm grateful for every instance when I am reminded to be ever watchful of the adversary and his endless array of tactics used to deceive, manipulate and tear down.
